MONUMENTO AL MIGRANTE DESCONOCIDO

Monument to the unknown migrant

Monument to the Unknown Migrant, Ernst Kraft, 2021
Installation on site, as part of the Tijuana Triennial, Mexico, 2021 Cyclone mesh, galvanized iron, barbed wire, artificial grass.  Approx. 270 x 270 x 270 cm.
The graphic and geometric beauty of a network of wire and posts, and the change in the density of the image according to the angle of view, seduces the draftsman, while his function is repugnant. The installation bitterly symbolizes the end of the journey of the anonymous migrant. Refugees from war, terror, economic and health misery, stumble over the retaining walls erected by the privileged, or fences around the distant dreams of a dignified life. The construction represents the border, the artificial and intentional division of space. The fence creates, when rising, two opposing fields, the one here, the one there, interior and exterior, friend or foe. It always cages, by will or against will, excludes and includes, fragments the environment. The installation, with a purely conceptual character, gains strength by being decontextualized. due to the location of the work on the terrace of the CECUT Art Center where the Triennial is held.
